Cataract surgery in Frankfurt has become a routine procedure, typically performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. Certain factors can make the procedure more difficult, for example, if surgery is delayed for too long and the lens develops an overripe clouding. In advanced cases, the grayish coloration behind the pupil becomes visible—hence the name Grauer Star.
The only treatment is cataract surgery. Around 800,000 cataract surgeries are performed each year in Germany, making it one of the most common procedures in ophthalmology. In this surgery, the clouded natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens.
Vision can usually be restored to normal, depending on whether other eye conditions are present. Cataract surgery can also help normalize elevated intraocular pressure (glaucoma) in many cases.
At Augenland, cataract surgery is performed with topical anesthesia (eye drops), without general anesthesia, without stitches, and using the latest technology on an outpatient basis.
After surgery, patients may still need reading or progressive glasses.
Standard cataract surgery involves implantation of a monofocal lens, which does not correct additional refractive errors such as astigmatism or presbyopia. Today, cataract and existing vision problems like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia can be treated in a single step.
A premium lens can allow clear vision at all distances—often eliminating the need for glasses.
The wide range of intraocular lenses available after cataract surgery allows not only good distance vision but also sharp near vision, enabling a glasses-independent lifestyle. Factors such as your occupation and leisure activities are taken into account, along with the overall health of your eyes.
At Augenland Frankfurt, we offer the full spectrum of intraocular lenses:
However, if you prefer a premium lens that significantly reduces your dependence on glasses, you have the option of choosing a special lens. In this case, additional costs will be incurred, minus the portion covered by your health insurance.

During the cataract pre-examination, your eyes are thoroughly examined and measured.
The aim is to minimize or eliminate the need for glasses after surgery.
Pupils are dilated for a complete eye exam, including the anterior segment, natural lens, and retina. The doctor will discuss your hobbies, work, and daily activities to choose the best lens option.
Medical history, allergies, and medication use (e.g., blood thinners, diabetes medication, antihypertensives, sleep aids, antidepressants, prostate medications) are reviewed.
An in-depth discussion covers the surgical procedure, anesthesia, and post-operative care.
We recommend bringing a companion, as pupil dilation temporarily impairs vision. You may still travel home by public transport or taxi.
You may have a light breakfast and take regular medications. In the clinic, your eye will be dilated, and an IV line placed. Anesthesia is usually topical, though general anesthesia is available upon request.
The surgery lasts around 10–15 minutes. Including preparation and aftercare, expect to spend about one hour in the surgical area. It is best to have someone accompany you afterward.
A follow-up exam takes place the day after surgery. Anti-inflammatory and decongestant eye drops are prescribed for 3–6 weeks. Additional check-ups are done at one, three, and six weeks post-surgery. If the second eye also requires surgery, it is operated on one week later.
Cataract surgery is covered by statutory health insurance.
This means that the costs for a cataract operation are fully covered by your health insurance provider.
However, when it comes to intraocular lenses, your insurance only covers the implantation of a monofocal lens, which is the standard lens.
If you want to be free from glasses for distance vision, near vision, or both, premium lenses are an option. In that case, you will have a co-payment for the additional work, as shown below.
The following co-payments apply per eye:

If laser treatment cannot be performed for medical reasons, lens implants are an excellent alternative if you still wish to avoid wearing glasses or contact lenses.
In lens implantation, an additional lens is inserted into the eye. This procedure is reversible and can correct all types of refractive errors. The lens is inserted in a small procedure directly in front of the iris.
It is fixed to the iris with two tiny clips, ensuring it cannot shift and stays perfectly in place. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and you can go home the same day.
Some of the best-known and most commonly used lens implants are ARTISAN and ARTIFLEX lenses
