Many visual impairments in children are unfortunately detected far too late.
In general pediatric preventive examinations, only about 1 in 50 affected children is noticed – and then referred to the ophthalmologist. Since visual acuity is only checked during preventive care at the U8 at the age of 3.5 to 4 years, many visual disorders and misalignments remain undetected for a long time.
If a visual impairment is not recognized and treated in time, this can lead to so-called amblyopia (weak-sightedness) – a condition in which the affected eye remains permanently limited. Even with glasses or contact lenses, vision can then no longer be fully corrected later. This can have significant effects on school development and later career choices.
Therefore, our appeal: Have your child’s eyes examined regularly by an ophthalmologist – ideally already before the U8.
