Glaucoma Screening

From the age of 40, every patient should go to the ophthalmologist once a year for a glaucoma screening examination. The costs for this are not covered by the health insurers.

In addition to a general ophthalmological examination, glaucoma screening includes examining the optic nerve with a slit lamp and measuring the intraocular pressure. In addition, a medical history, the patient’s medical background, and current condition—which may indicate glaucoma—are recorded.

Measuring intraocular pressure is one of the most important steps for the early detection of glaucoma and is also used for follow-up monitoring. Intraocular pressure should be between 10 and 22 mmHg. However, elevated intraocular pressure does not necessarily lead to glaucoma. Many people with elevated intraocular pressure do not develop glaucoma. In about 20% of those affected, the disease can also be present at a low intraocular pressure.

To measure intraocular pressure, a non-contact tonometer is used at Augenland. During the measurement, the eye is not touched but measured only with a puff of air. Therefore, the examination is completely painless.

The glaucoma screening examination costs €30 at Augenland.
