Driver’s license medical assessment at Augenland Frankfurt
With us, driver’s license medical assessments (examinations) are carried out in accordance with the Driver Licensing Regulation (FEV). We issue the corresponding certificates for you.
All truck drivers aged 50 and over must have their driver’s license renewed at the driver’s license office, since a new standard for driver’s licenses and their time limits has been in effect in Europe since 01.01.2000.
For the renewal, a driver’s license medical assessment from the ophthalmologist and a fitness-to-drive certificate from the general practitioner are required.
In the driver’s license medical assessment issued by your ophthalmologist, color vision, central visual acuity, the functionality of the visual field, and stereoscopic (spatial) vision are certified. In addition, your eyes are examined with regard to any hidden strabismus and organic changes.
Persons who wish to apply for a passenger transport license must also present a driver’s license medical assessment.
The following visual functions are checked and measured during the examination:
- Daytime visual acuity: The ability of the eye to perceive its surroundings and to resolve even small things in detail and “bring them closer.”
- Visual field: This refers to the image the eye perceives when looking straight ahead. The visual field is examined by means of so-called perimetry in order to determine any visual field defects (scotomas).
- Night vision and glare sensitivity: The older one gets, the worse the ability to see in the dark usually becomes. We check, with so-called twilight vision testing, how well you can perceive contrasts and colors in the dark and how well you generally see when there is less light.
- Eye alignment and eye motility: This is checked when there is a malposition of the eyes. A malposition can, for example, cause double vision. Should this be the case, the person concerned may not participate in road traffic. However, if no double images are produced by strabismus (squinting) and nystagmus (uncontrollable, rhythmic movements of the eyes), the applicant may participate in road traffic.
- Color vision: To test your color vision, we use Ishihara plates. With these, for example, a red weakness can be detected. An anomaly quotient below 0.5 leads, in the case of red blindness, to unfitness to drive for driver’s license classes D, D1, DE, and D1E. If the anomaly quotient is below 0.5, a person in these driver’s license classes may not participate in road traffic. A medical assessment carried out by a qualified doctor is particularly important for driver’s license classes C–D.
At Augenland Frankfurt we charge €165 for a driver’s license medical assessment.
