Glaucoma

Glaucoma (Green Star) is a common eye disease that develops very slowly. The area we perceive with our eyes, also called the visual field, becomes progressively smaller over the course of the disease. This loss cannot be reversed; however, with timely preventive care, it can be avoided.

In glaucoma, the intraocular pressure rises abnormally. This increase in pressure restricts the supply of nutrients to the retinal nerve cells, which can then die off. If glaucoma remains untreated, it causes visual disturbances and can lead to blindness.

By examining changes to the optic nerve head and testing the visual field (now computer-assisted), the death of nerve cells can be detected early. Measuring intraocular pressure and assessing the optic nerve head are the main diagnostic methods. For monitoring the progression, intraocular pressure and visual acuity are checked regularly. A visual field test is performed, and the optic nerve head is measured using tomography.
