Safe participation in road traffic requires optimal vision.
Every applicant must present a vision test documenting visual acuity in order to register for the driving license test for classes A, B, and BE.
If the determined visual acuity of both eyes, with or without corrective aids (glasses or contact lenses), is 70% (0.7), the vision test is considered passed.
If this vision test is not passed, or if the patient wishes to obtain a driving license for classes C, D, CE, DE, or a taxi driver’s license, an eye medical report is always required.
Since January 1, 2000, driving license classes in Europe have been subject to a European standard, which mandates the renewal of truck licenses.
Truck drivers must have their license renewed at the age of 50 at the licensing authorities.
For this renewal, both a medical driving license report from the ophthalmologist and a traffic fitness certificate from the general practitioner are required.
The driving license medical report certifies color vision, central visual acuity, depth perception, and visual field function.
An examination for the ophthalmologist’s report includes:
- A detailed medical history
- A subjective and objective measurement of visual acuity
- A complete examination of all parts of the eye
- Binocular examination of the ocular fundus
- Examination for strabismus and phoria
- Visual field examination
- Color vision test with an anomaloscope
- Qualitative/quantitative examination of binocular vision
- Examination of glare sensitivity and twilight vision
The eyes are also examined for hidden squinting and organic changes.
Corrective aids (glasses, contact lenses) should definitely be brought to the examination. The driving license will indicate if the required criteria are met only with corrective aids.
