Eye examinations in childhood

Visual impairments in children are often detected too late. Yet a lifelong visual impairment can actually be prevented with timely treatment.

Developmental disorders in the learning process are, of course, not always explained by eye problems. Often, however, undetected visual impairments can worsen an existing problem.

Every child should therefore be examined by an ophthalmologist as early as possible. The eye examination of your child depends on age, stage of development, and current condition. If you notice in your child a reading/spelling weakness, reluctance to read, general unwillingness, quick fatigue when concentrating, eye rubbing, headaches, frequent blinking, winking, squinting, light sensitivity, or clumsiness, you should go to the ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

Examination in the orthoptic clinic (Sehschule)

At the first eye examination, your child will also be examined by an orthoptist from the Sehschule. An orthoptist is specially trained, in particular in testing visual acuity and the interaction of the eyes. She determines the presence of binocular vision or of strabismus.

Examination with pupil-dilating eye drops

This examination has two goals.

The ophthalmologist wants to examine the eye holistically in order to rule out diseases inside the eye such as, for example, cataract, eye tumors, retinal detachments, or congenital malformations. These eye drops also relax the internal eye muscles. Only in this way is it possible to rule out a refractive error in your child.
