Eye diseases can be treated more easily and successfully if they are detected early. The period for the full development of good and binocular vision is limited — vision can only be improved within the first years of life.
When should children see an eye doctor?
- Immediately after birth if there are clear, visible abnormalities of the eyes such as large light-sensitive eyes, corneal clouding, eyelid changes, eye tremors, noticeable clumsiness, drooping eyelids covering the pupil.
- At 6–12 months if there is an increased risk of strabismus, hereditary eye diseases, or refractive errors. This is the case if children are born prematurely, have developmental disorders, if siblings have severe refractive errors or strabismus, or if hereditary eye diseases are known in the family.
- By 30–42 months at the latest, every child should have an examination — even if the eyes appear normal.
Particularly with one-sided vision problems, there is a high risk they will be detected too late. An early examination by an ophthalmologist can provide certainty, identify eye and vision defects, and ensure optimal treatment.
Even if your child shows no abnormalities or symptoms, it is still important to have regular preventive check-ups and eye examinations.
